Company Alumni & ERG Networks
When you're laid off, your fastest path back is people who already know you. Find your company's alumni network, Slack/Discord groups, and employee resource groups — and add the ones you know.
How do alumni networks help you find a job after a layoff?
A referral or an introduction from a former colleague changes who reads your application: it puts you in front of a person rather than a filter. A company alumni search or employee resource group (ERG) reconnects you with people who already know your work — so they can vouch for you, forward your resume, and flag openings before they're posted. Treat it as the channel that raises your visibility fastest, running alongside your direct applications rather than replacing them.
Use the directory below to find your company's alumni group, Slack/Discord community, or ERG. Then message about five people with a short, specific note (template below) — aim for warm reconnections, not mass asks.

- 15–30 minutes to find and message 5 people

What is an employee resource group (ERG)?
An employee resource group (ERG) is a voluntary, employee-led community built around a shared identity or experience — women in tech, LGBTQ+ employees, veterans, working parents, or people of color, among many others. ERGs exist to create belonging, mentorship, and a voice inside a company. The connections you build through them are personal, not contractual, so they stay with you even after you leave a role — which is exactly why they matter during a job search.
Why former colleagues are worth contacting first
Former colleagues already know how you work, so they can vouch for you, forward your resume to the right person, and tell you about openings before they're posted. A warm introduction gets your name in front of a hiring manager instead of into an applicant queue — which is why it is usually the highest-leverage hour of your search, even though the size of the effect varies by company, role and market. It is a way to raise your visibility, not a substitute for applying.
How to find your company's alumni group
- Run a LinkedIn PEOPLE search for '<company> alumni' — that always resolves, unlike group invites, which rotate and expire.
- Check whether your company runs an official alumni program or directory.
- Ask a few former colleagues which Slack or Discord communities they're in.
- Look for industry-wide communities (engineering, design, product) beyond a single company.
How to start one if it doesn't exist yet
If your company has no alumni group, start small: create a LinkedIn group or a Slack/Discord server, invite a dozen former colleagues you trust, and seed it with job leads and intros. Keep it useful — a steady trickle of openings and referrals — and it will grow on its own. Then add it to this directory so others can find it.
How to use this directory
You don't need to contact everyone — a focused 15–30 minutes goes a long way. Work through these steps:
- 1Find your former employer's alumni network or ERG in the list below (or add it if it's missing).
- 2Join the group and update your LinkedIn headline to signal you're open to work.
- 3Make a short list of 5 former colleagues who know your work well.
- 4Send each a personal note using the template below — reference a specific project.
- 5Follow up once after about a week if you don't hear back, then move on.
Estimated time: 15–30 minutes · Cost: usually free

Hi [Name], I hope you're doing well! I was recently laid off from [Company] as part of a [round/reorg], and I'm starting my search for [role/type of role]. I really valued working with you on [project/team], and I'd love to reconnect. Two quick things: 1. If you hear of any [role] openings on your team or network, I'd be grateful for a heads-up or referral. 2. If you have 15 minutes in the next couple of weeks, I'd love to catch up. Either way, no pressure — thanks for reading, and I'm happy to return the favor anytime. Best, [Your name] [LinkedIn / phone]
How we keep this directory honest
A directory of communities is only worth as much as its links. Ours are checked automatically rather than trusted: for every entry we confirm the domain resolves, that its TLS certificate is currently valid, and that the page actually answers. Each card shows the date it was last checked. Be clear on what that does not cover — the check tests whether a link resolves, not whether the destination is the community we describe. It catches dead links; it does not vouch for what is on the other end.
That check earns its place. When we first ran it across this list it found three entries that had been quietly failing — one community whose security certificate had expired months earlier, so every visitor met a browser warning; one whose domain had stopped resolving entirely; and one organization that had wound down without our description catching up. All three are fixed, and the check now runs against the published list so the same drift gets caught rather than accumulating.
- Company alumni networks open a LinkedIn people search rather than a group invite. Invite links rotate and expire; a search always resolves, on mobile and desktop alike.
- Communities link to a stable public homepage, never a rotating Slack or Discord invite.
- Groups that have closed stay listed and labelled, because the people are often still findable even when the organization is gone. We would rather tell you a group ended than send you to it as though it hadn't.
- Submissions are moderated before they publish, then join the same automatic checks.
Safety & privacy when using community groups
- Alumni Slack/Discord groups are run by volunteers, not your former employer — treat them as public spaces.
- Don't share confidential company information, severance terms, or anything under an NDA.
- Verify recruiters and “job offers” posted in open communities before sharing personal details or documents.
- Never pay to join a job network or to “unlock” a referral — legitimate alumni groups are free.
- Use a personal email and phone number, not one tied to your old work account.
