Not a list somebody's intuition produced. In August 2026 the Bureau of Labor Statistics published an AI exposure category for 831 occupations, next to its own pay and ten-year projections. This page uses that — and lets you look up the job you actually do.

What “AI-proof” means on this page

It means less exposed than other occupations— nothing stronger. Every level on this page is BLS's own “Relative AI exposure” category, copied verbatim. We did not invent the bands, derive them, or rename them, because a page like this assembled from intuition is worth nothing and there is now an official classification covering 831 occupations.

The exposure category is relative to other occupations. It does not imply an absolute “high” or “low” level of exposure.

Exposure signifies that AI technology could be or has been used to assist or complete some of the work performed in an occupation. Exposure does not imply job loss, productivity gains, automation probability, or wage effects.

Read that second quote twice, because it is the one that gets lost. Exposure is a measure of overlap between what an occupation does and what AI can do. It is not a prediction that the occupation shrinks. The clearest proof sits inside the same spreadsheet:

The jobs people assume are AI-proof, but aren't

This is the most useful section here if you came looking for reassurance. Every one of these is a job that regularly gets named as safe, and every one of them BLS puts in a higher band. That does not mean they are bad careers — several are growing fast. It means the intuition people use to judge AI risk is unreliable, which is the argument for checking rather than assuming.

Registered nurses

Highexposure+5.6% to 2035

Nursing is the job people name first when asked what AI cannot do. BLS puts it in the second-highest band — not because a model can take a blood pressure, but because so much of the recorded work is assessment, documentation and care planning.

Information security analysts

Very highexposure+21.0% to 2035

Cybersecurity is the standard advice for a laid-off technologist looking for safety. It is in the highest exposure band — and growing 21.0%. Both facts are true at once, which is the clearest illustration on this page that exposure is not decline.

Lawyers

Very highexposure+4.7% to 2035

Law is supposed to be protected by judgement and liability. BLS places it in the highest band, and the Eloundou beta agrees. The liability argument protects the licence, not the hours.

General and operations managers

Highexposure+5.0% to 2035

Management is widely assumed to be safe because it is about people. BLS puts general and operations managers in the second-highest band.

Occupational health and safety specialists

Highexposure+18.5% to 2035

Compliance and safety work looks unautomatable until you separate the desk from the site. The specialist role sits a whole band above the technician role that does the same work in person.

BLS places most office and computer-based occupations in its highest band — software development, accounting, paralegal work, customer service, technical writing, graphic design and administrative roles among them. The mistake is treating this as one decision. It is two, running on different clocks: what you do for money over the next few months, and what you retrain into over the next few years. Deciding them together is what leads people to enrol in something expensive in week three.

How this reads differently in India

The figures above are US occupations with US projections. They are not Indian figures, and converting the pay to rupees would be meaningless — a median wage reflects a national labour market, not an exchange rate.

What the international evidence does say is that exposure rises with country income. The International Labour Organization's global index finds roughly 11% of employment in low-income countries falls into an exposure gradient, against 34% in high-income countries, because the clerical, financial and customer-service roles that are most exposed are concentrated in richer economies. The ILO publishes no India-specific exposure figure, so neither do we.

The place that matters most for Indian readers is the global capability centre. NASSCOM and Zinnov put India's GCC sector at 2,117 GCCs employing about 2.36 million people as of FY2026, with more than 1,200 of them already running AI or machine learning capability. That is simultaneously where a great deal of exposed work sits and where the oversight roles are being created.

Methodology

Where the exposure levels come from

All of them are the Bureau of Labor Statistics' “Relative AI exposure” field, published on 2026-08-27 with its 2025–35 employment projections and copied here verbatim. BLS built the categories by combining five published studies — Felten, Raj and Seamans; Eloundou, Manning, Mishkin and Rock; Eisfeldt, Schubert, Taska and Zhang; Massenkoff and McCrory at Anthropic; and Tomlinson and colleagues at Microsoft — taking median percentile ranks within the theoretical and the observed families, then running a clustering algorithm over the result. Clustering, not quartiles: the four groups come out near-equal in size, but the method is not a percentile split and describing it as one would misstate it.

Why there is no definition of “Moderate” or “High”

Because BLS does not publish one. It defines only Low and Very high in prose; Moderate and High are the two intermediate clusters. Writing definitions for them would mean inventing them, so this page quotes the two that exist and says nothing about the two that do not.

How the list was selected

Mechanically. Every role on this list sits in one of the two lower BLS relative-exposure categories (Low or Moderate) and has positive projected employment growth to 2035. Nothing qualifies by intuition.Occupations were then grouped into the seven categories used above, which is our editorial layer, and nothing was added or removed on the strength of how safe it sounds. That is why registered nurses do not appear on the list despite being the job people name first — BLS puts nursing in the second-highest band, and the “surprises” section exists to say so rather than quietly dropping the row.

Pay, growth and entry routes

Median annual wages are BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for May 2025. Projected employment change and annual openings are BLS Employment Projections for 2025–35. “Entry route” is BLS's own “typical education needed for entry” and “typical on-the-job training” fields, quoted rather than estimated. None of these is a statement about a particular programme, employer or region.

The Eloundou column

Where the tool shows a second figure, it is the beta measure from Eloundou, Manning, Mishkin and Rock — the share of an occupation's tasks a language model could halve the time on, counting app-mediated exposure at half weight. It is the authors' central estimate. Treat it as texture behind the BLS band rather than an independent check: BLS used that same paper as one of its five inputs, so the two are not fully independent and we would rather say so than imply corroboration.

Three things, all labelled where they appear: the category groupings, the selection of which occupations to list, and the suggested lower-exposure roles in the tool. That last one is a judgement about transferable skills, not a BLS crosswalk, and the tool says so on the result rather than in a footnote.

Does high AI exposure mean my job is disappearing?+
No, and the data contradicts that reading directly. Information security analysts sit in the highest exposure band and are projected to grow 21.0% to 2035. Network and computer systems administrators sit in the same band and are projected to fall 4.1%. Same exposure, opposite trajectories — because exposure describes how much of the work overlaps with what AI can do, not whether the occupation is shrinking.
Which jobs are most exposed to AI?+
BLS places most office and computer-based occupations in its highest band, including software developers, accountants, paralegals, customer service representatives, technical writers, graphic designers and administrative roles. I was laid off because of AI. What should I do first?+
Separate the two clocks before you do anything else. Your money has one timeline and your retraining has another, and a pivot that needs two years of study is a different decision when your runway is three months than when it is twelve. Work out the runway first, keep searching in your existing field while you decide, and only then pick a target role — because the search you run today funds the retraining you start later.
Are trades really safer from AI than tech jobs?+
On this classification, consistently yes. Every skilled trade on this list sits in the Low or Moderate band, while nearly every computer occupation sits in the highest one. The reason is not that trades are simple — it is that they happen in non-standard physical environments where each job differs, and current systems are weakest exactly there. Pay is not a trade-off either: several trades here pay above $95,000 at the median.
How long does it take to retrain into one of these roles?+
It varies enormously and this page deliberately does not guess. What each row does show is the Bureau of Labor Statistics' own “typical education needed for entry” and “typical on-the-job training” for that occupation — so you can see which need a master's degree, which need a postsecondary award, and which are entered through a paid apprenticeship. What a specific programme near you costs and how long it runs is a local question, and the honest answer is to go and ask.
